Not  long  ago,  I  read  an  article  online  by  Xu  Bing  who  is  president  of  CAFA.  There  is  a  paragraph  from  it: "There  are  very  few  artists  are  doing  great  work  in  contemporary  art.  But  why  are  Chinese  artists  received  so  much  international  attention?  The  world  is  very  interested  in  Chinese  contemporary  art,  because  it  reflects  reality  in  China.  We  need  to  realize  that  this  is  not  art…In  fact,  we  should  be  aware  of  others  who  pay  attention  to  our  contemporary  art,  it’s  not  because  of  the  art  itself.  I  remember  there  is  a  paragraph  from  Li  Xianting’s  Art  is  not  the  Point  “Because  we  lack  development  in  science  and  others,  more  and  more  art  exhibit  in  salons.  There  were  fewer  philosophers,  so  some  pretended  to  be  philosophers.  We  lack  voice,  so  contemporary  art  takes  responsibility  for  representing  the  voice  of  people.  This  is  the  pride  of  contemporary  Chinese  art,  but  this  is  also  sad.   "  the  definition  of  these  two  important  men:  If  the  artworks  are  not  created  in  artistic  ways,  the  works  are  not  art.  Xu  Bing  thought  art  should  have  a  real  artistic  language.  Li  Xianting  puts  more  emphasis  on  something  beyond  art.  Why  there  are  two  arguments  in  the  Chinese  art  world?  There  are  two  trends  of  art.  Which  is  more  important,  art  or  reality?    

I  remember  when  we  were  children,  some  of  the  textbooks  were  named   "Fine  Arts ".  Now  we  heard   "art "  instead  of  “Fine  Arts”.  When  I  was  young,  I  thought  the  beautiful  art  can  be  called  Fine  Arts,  if  the  art  without  beauty  we  just  called  it  art.  In  the  early  days,  I  read  the  art  magazines  Chinese  painting,  I  liked  Chen  Yifei  most.  I  dreamed  one  day,  I  could  paint  beautiful  paintings  as  him,  and  sell  them  at  high  prices,  then  live  a  decent  life.  The  great  dream  was  I  wish  I  could  enroll  in  the  Central  Academy  of  Fine  Arts,  later  to  be  a  professor.  Then  I  can  draw  beautiful  women  every  day  and  don’t  need  to  worry  about  life.  Now  I  don’t  think  those  dreams  can  come  true.  I  studied,  joined  the  army,  then  worked.  I  once  thought  others  did  the  paintings  for  twenty  years  can  get  a  great  achievement,  I  could  get  it  in  fifty  years.  But,  I  learnt  that  art  education  had  less  power  when  faced  of  the  development  of  society.  I  have  nothing  to  do  with  the  dream  life.  Although  the  living  is  not  a  problem,  but  life  is  so  desperate,  even  it’s  difficult  to  live  a  comfortable  life.

Later,  I  got  to  know  contemporary  art  a  little  bit,  I  painted  some  paintings,  sold  them  to  earn  some  money,  but  I  still  was  not  sure  my  work  was  art,  I  still  confused  of  art.  Earlier  this  year,  I  rented  an  apartment  near  Songzhuang.  I  came  to  Beijing  to  see  whether  I  can  do  the  real  art.  I  saw  some  exhibitions  and  expos.  When  I  saw  some  very  good  artworks,  i  felt  frustrated,  because  I  don’t  think  I  can  make  this  kind  of  artworks  too.  I  can’t  make  it.  The  worse  situation  was  the  solitary  life  made  me  numb.  Then  I  went  back  home.  I  felt  this  place  is  right  to  me,  I  live  here,  work  here,  this  is  my  life.  I  only  can  make  artworks  which  relate  to  my  real  life.  I  can’t  make  great  artworks  like  others.  I  have  ideas  of  four  possibilities  how  to  become  an  artist  (see  below),  suppose  the  person  has  talent  in  art:  

Example  one:  He  was  born  in  a  big  city  like  Beijing,  he  has  the  best  learning  environment  for  the  arts,  has  the  most  possibility  to  enroll  in  the  Central  Academy  of  Fine  Arts,  the  highest  probability  of  becoming  an  artist.

Example  two:  He  was  born  in  an  average  family  in  a  medium-sized  city,  the  environment  of    studying  art  is  ok,  has  some  possibilities  to  enroll  in  the  Academy  of  Fine  Arts  and  art  department  of  Normal  Universities,  has  some  possibilities  to  become  an  artist.

Example  three:  He  was  born  in  a  small  city,  the  environment  for  studying  art  is  worse,  there  isn’t  much  possibilities  to  enroll  in  the  Academy  of  Fine  Arts.  He  has  less  chance  to  become  an  artist.

Example  four:  He  was  born  in  a  poor  family  in  the  countryside,  there  is  nearly  no  opportunity  to  learn  art,  there  isn’t  much  possibilities  to  enroll  in  the  Academy  of  Fine  Arts,  if  he  is  lucky,  he  can  study  art  in  college,  He  has  little  possibility  be  a  become  an  artist.

The  four  examples  above,  there  can  be  other  possibilities,  the  results  just  like  that.

In  fact,  to  anybody,  art  itself  is  not  the  ultimate  purpose.  Self-development  is  the  ultimate  goal.  Art  is  a  kind  of  expression  by  these  talented  artists  who  created  for  self-development  or  expressing  opinions  of  reality.  The  art  has  less  practical  use  but  cost  high,  as  a  spiritual  product  is  undoubtedly  exists  as  a  luxury.  That  means  elites  create  and  consume  art.  On  the  other  hand,  art  ability  is  like  other  abilities  and  can  be  a  skill  for  life.  Artists  created  more  art  when  there  is  more  demand.  The  reality  is  not  always  ideal.  When  there  is  no  need  for  one  kind  of  skill,  the  artist  becomes  less  useful  in  life.  In  this  kind  of  situation,  art  is  hard  to  achieve.  We  need  to  recognize  the  reality,  art  may  not  be  the  right  solution.  For  some  people,  who  have  condition  to  make  art,  or  who  can  afford  and  appreciate  art,  art  is  a  meaningful  or  interesting  thing.  However,  for  others,  art  is  not  that  important  at  all.  The  talent  and  dreams  even  are  burdens  to  them.  The  fate  makes  more  sense.
